BY ALL MEANS, MAURICIO RODRIGUEZ SHOULD NOT BE ALIVE TODAY. GROWING UP IN THE SUBURBS OF LOS ANGELES, HE LED A FAIRLY NORMAL CHILDHOOD AND COMFORTABLE EXISTENCE. EVERYTHING CHANGED WHEN AT THE AGE OF 15, HE UNCOVERED A PAINFUL PAST WROUGHT WITH ADULTERY, MALICE, BROKENNESS, AND AS HE WOULD COME TO FIND OUT, ATTEMPTED MURDER. 

BORN IN A REMOTE AREA OF ESTELÍ, NICARAGUA TO AN UNMARRIED MOTHER AND ALCOHOLIC FATHER WITH 25 OTHER CHILDREN, NEWBORN MAURICIO WAS THROWN INTO THE OPEN HOLE OF AN OUTHOUSE AND ABANDONED TO DIE. HIS MOTHER THEN LODGED LARGE STONES IN THE PIT TO ENSURE HIS DEATH AND COVER HER CRIME. 

IT WASN’T UNTIL DAYS LATER, WHEN A GROUP OF BOYS PLAYING SOCCER NEARBY HEARD THE CRIES COMING FROM WITHIN THE OUTHOUSE, THAT MAURICIO WAS RESCUED AND TAKEN TO THE HOSPITAL. WHY HE DIDN’T EVEN BEAR A SCRAPE OR A BRUISE WAS BEYOND REASON OR EXPLANATION. WHY HE HAD MIRACULOUSLY LANDED ON A WEDGED BOARD THAT BROKE HIS FALL BAFFLED EVERYONE. 

AFTER A LONG PERIOD OF DEEP QUESTIONING AND HURT FOLLOWING THE DISCOVERY OF HIS PAST, MAURICIO BEGAN LIVING IN THE CONFIDENCE THAT HE IS ALIVE TODAY FOR A REASON, AND SURELY NOT FOR A LIFE OF COMFORT IN LOS ANGELES. WITH THIS CONVICTION AND DETERMINATION, HE RECENTLY MADE THE BOLD DECISION TO MOVE HIS LIFE TO THE VERY LAND HE WAS BORN ON, A LAND OF HURT AND OF MIRACLES, IN ORDER TO RESTORE THE YOUNG MOTHERS AND CHILDREN OF NICARAGUA INTO THEIR TRUE IDENTITIES. 

THE MISSION

WE ARE A NON-PROFIT ORGANIZATION ON A MISSION TO LEAD MOTHERS AND CHILDREN INTO THEIR GOD-GIVEN IDENTITY AND CALLING, ENABLING THEM TO MINISTER POWERFULLY WITH SIGNS AND WONDERS AND BRING HEALING TO THE NATION.

THE NEED

Nicaragua is the poorest of the Central American countries and has a very young population. Approximately 70% of the nation is under the age of 30. Of that number, 38.7% are 14 years old or younger, and 31.3% are ages 15-29.

Nicaragua also has the highest rate of teen pregnancies in Central America. According to government figures, an astounding 40-45% of registered pregnancies are for young women 13-19 years old. Teen births average 127,000 per year.

A survey conducted from 2010-2011 revealed that 205 out of 547 girls became pregnant after reporting that they had been raped or had been victims of incest. The majority of those who became pregnant were 12-15 years old.

The mission and vision of Tree of Life '84 is to respond to these grievous social issues with a comprehensive initiative for bettering the lives of young mothers and their babies.

Tree of Life '84 was His plan. 31 years later, I have come back to purchase the land where I was born and build a home that would rescue, nurture, disciple, and train teen moms during their pregnancy. Once they deliver their baby, we will provide job opportunities with childcare, so they may continue their education, or they may choose instead to grant legal child-custody to Tree of Life '84.
